Aladdin was now a young man living with his mother. Years before, he had escaped an evil magician’s cave with a magic ring, a magic lamp and precious jewels. The ring and lamp each had their own genie. The ring genie had rescued him from the cave.
One day he saw the Princess, the Sultan’s daughter, lift her veil in the street, and he wished to marry her. The Sultan had ordered people to stay inside as she passed.

His mother took the cave jewels as a gift to the Sultan; after a week of waiting, she was allowed to ask for the marriage. She carried the brilliant stones in a bowl.
The Vizier, the Sultan’s chief adviser, wanted the Princess for his own son; at his urging, the Sultan promised Aladdin the marriage after a three-month wait. The delay would give the Vizier time to change the Sultan’s mind.

Only two months later, a procession announced the Princess’s wedding to the Vizier’s son, breaking the Sultan’s promise to Aladdin. The streets filled with celebration.
Aladdin called the lamp genie and ordered him to bring the newly married pair’s bed to his own room that night. He wanted to prevent the promised marriage being taken from him.
