The White Rabbit showed the court a poem that had been found near the tarts. The King treated its puzzling words as proof against the Knave.

The Queen demanded a sentence before the jury had reached a verdict. Alice objected because a court should decide what happened first.

Alice called the court a pack of cards, and its angry card soldiers flew toward her. Their painted faces flashed as they rushed closer.

The flying cards turned into falling leaves as Alice woke on the riverbank beside her sister. She had been asleep during the whole strange journey.

Alice told her sister about the White Rabbit, the changing sizes and the Queen’s trial. Her sister listened as the summer afternoon grew quiet.

Alice’s sister stayed by the river and closed her eyes. She imagined the Rabbit hurrying by and the Gryphon calling from the distance.
