A poor Norwegian family gathers in a small cottage with their young adult youngest daughter

A poor farmer in Norway lived with his wife and many children, including a beautiful youngest daughter who was now a young woman. Their cottage was small and their meals were simple.

One stormy Thursday evening, something large knocked at their door. Rain beat against the roof.

A great white bear offered to make the family rich if their youngest daughter would come away with him. He spoke like a person.

The farmer asked his daughter, but she said no; the bear agreed to return the following Thursday. She did not want to leave her family.

During that week, the farmer persuaded his daughter to accept the bear’s offer, and at last she agreed. He spoke of the help it would bring her brothers and sisters.

The bear returned, and she said goodbye to her family before climbing onto his back. He told her to hold tightly to his fur.
