Page 1
A young woman had secretly seen an enchanted prince’s face too soon and dripped three drops of candle tallow on his shirt. This had spoiled his chance to be free. Now he must marry his Troll stepmother’s long-nosed daughter in a castle east of the sun and west of the moon, so she set out to find him. He had lived as a white bear until their enchantment’s condition was broken.
An old woman had given her a golden apple and a borrowed horse; she rode to a second old woman and sent the horse home as instructed. She tapped its left ear to send it back.

The second old woman did not know the way, but gave her a golden carding comb, a tool for preparing wool. Its teeth glittered in the light.
The woman lent her another horse to reach a third old woman, and the girl sent that horse home when she arrived. She rode on through unfamiliar country.

Page 3
The third old woman gave her a golden spinning wheel and said the East Wind might know the castle. The wheel was made for turning wool into thread.
The woman lent her a horse to the East Wind’s home; after the girl sent it back, she asked the wind for help. She described the enchanted prince.
