Page 1
Long ago, the Māori hero Māui lived with his brothers. The living sun raced across the sky. Māui was the youngest brother and could work great magic.
The days were too short for people to finish gathering the food they needed. Darkness kept interrupting their work.

“Let us catch the sun and make it move more slowly,” Māui told his brothers. He planned to hold it with a great rope snare.
His brothers feared the sun’s heat, but Māui said his magic would help them. No ordinary person could stand so close to its fierce light.

An older relative named Muri-ranga-whenua had given Māui an enchanted jawbone. She was one of his ancestresses, women from earlier generations of his family.
He would take this magical weapon when he and his brothers went to catch the sun. Ropes alone would not do everything he intended.
