The hare loved to show how quickly those long legs could run. One day, the hare made fun of the tortoise’s short feet and careful pace.

The tortoise did not grow angry. The teasing gave the tortoise an idea: they could settle the matter with a race.

The tortoise challenged the hare to a race. The hare thought winning would be easy and agreed at once. They asked the fox to choose a fair course.

The fox marked the starting place and a goal farther down the woodland path. When the appointed day arrived, both racers came to the line.

At the fox’s signal, the hare sprang forward and soon disappeared around the bend. The tortoise started at the same moment, moving much more slowly.

The tortoise did not try to match the hare’s long leaps. Each short step carried the tortoise toward the same finish line.
