Mole grew tired of spring cleaning, climbed beside a river, and met Water Rat, who invited him into his boat. Mole had never explored this stretch of water before.
Rat taught Mole how much he loved life along the riverbank. Mole fumbled with the oars at first, but Rat kindly helped him.
Page 2
Rat took Mole to meet his friend Toad at Toad Hall, and Toad persuaded them to travel in his horse-drawn caravan. Toad was wealthy and full of new ideas.
A speeding motorcar frightened the caravan horse and sent the caravan into a ditch. No one was badly hurt, but Toad forgot the broken caravan at once.

Later Mole walked into the Wild Wood alone because he hoped to meet wise Badger. The trees crowded together and the paths became hard to follow.
Rat followed Mole’s tracks through the snow, found him, and led him to a door beneath the trees. Mole was cold and frightened but unharmed.
