Dorothy lived with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a Kansas farm, and her little black dog Toto stayed close beside her. One day the sky darkened and Uncle Henry warned that a cyclone was coming.
The cyclone lifted the house with Dorothy and Toto inside, carried them far away, then set it down with a bump. They had spent hours inside while the wind roared around them.

The house had landed on the Wicked Witch of the East, whose rule over the Munchkins now ended. Dorothy had not meant to hurt anyone, and the news startled her.
A kind Witch of the North arrived and gave Dorothy the fallen Witch’s silver shoes, then told her to seek the Wizard in Emerald City. He might know a way back to Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.

Dorothy and Toto followed the yellow brick road through the Munchkins’ blue-painted country. The people they passed offered food and a place to sleep.
The next day Dorothy kept walking toward Emerald City, where the Wizard lived. She carried a basket and watched Toto trot ahead.
