Page 1
Dorothy, Toto and the Scarecrow were still following the yellow road when they heard a groan in the trees. They found a Tin Woodman standing motionless with an axe raised.
Dorothy oiled a rusted Tin Woodman so he could move, and he joined them to ask the Wizard for a heart. He told them he had once loved someone but feared his tin body could no longer feel.
Page 2
A Lion sprang from the forest and frightened Toto, but Dorothy stood between them. The Lion drew back when she scolded him.
The Lion joined Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman to ask the Wizard for courage. Their different wishes gave them a reason to stay together.
Page 3
The friends made a raft to cross a river, but its current carried the Scarecrow away on a pole. Dorothy feared they would lose him as the raft reached the other bank.
A Stork rescued the Scarecrow from the river; beyond it, red poppies made Dorothy, Toto and the Lion sleepy. The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman did not need sleep, so they carried Dorothy and Toto clear.
