Page 1
When the friends demanded the Wizard’s promised help, Toto knocked over a screen and revealed an ordinary man behind it. The frightening head and other shapes had been tricks he controlled.
The ordinary man called Oz said he would do what he could for each traveler. He had ruled Emerald City by making people believe in his great powers.
Page 2
Oz gave the Scarecrow a head filled with bran and pins, the Tin Woodman a silk heart, and the Lion a drink he called courage. Each friend felt pleased with the gift.
Oz planned to make a balloon and fly with Dorothy across the desert toward Kansas. He asked her to be ready when it lifted.
Page 3
Toto ran into the crowd just as Dorothy was about to step into the balloon. She chased him because she would not leave him behind.
The balloon flew away without Dorothy and Toto, so her friends promised to help find another way home. They had received their gifts but did not want Dorothy to face the journey alone.
