On the road south, the friends passed fighting trees and a country of tiny people made from delicate china. The Tin Woodman cut a path past the branches without harming his companions.

Farther on, the Lion helped forest animals who feared a great spider. He defeated it and the animals asked him to become their king.

Glinda listens as Dorothy asks how to return to Kansas

Glinda, the good Witch of the South, welcomed Dorothy and explained that her silver shoes could carry her and Toto home. Dorothy explained the cyclone, the yellow road and her missed balloon ride.

Before leaving, Dorothy gave Glinda the Golden Cap so the Winged Monkeys could help her friends reach their chosen homes. The Scarecrow would return to Emerald City, the Tin Woodman to the Winkies, and the Lion to his forest.

Dorothy hugged the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Lion goodbye, then lifted Toto in her arms. She told the silver shoes to take them home to Aunt Em.

Dorothy tapped her silver shoes three times to fly home with Toto; the shoes fell away, but they landed safely on the Kansas prairie. The farmhouse had been replaced while she was gone.
